To the choirmaster: according to Mahalath. A Maskil of David.
The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity; there is none who does good. Have those who work evil no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon God? There they are, in great terror, where there is no terror! For God scatters the bones of him who encamps against you; you put them to shame, for God has rejected them.
People may say there is no God in order to cover their sin and define their own morality. They want to have an excuse to continue in sin and to ignore the Judge with no fear of his judgment. Fools do not necessarily lack intelligence; many atheists and unbelievers are highly educated. Foolish people willfully reject God, the only one who can save them. While God is not affected by what we think of him or try to do to him, we are eternally affected by what God thinks of us and ultimately does for us. God is merciful and patient, giving us opportunities to turn from our sinful lifestyles to live for him. This psalm points out, however, that many people, in their desire to rule their own lives, convince themselves that there is no God. And if they believe there is no God, then they become their own gods and set up their own moral standards. Ultimately, when their lives end and God passes judgment, it will be too late to repent and admit they were wrong. Rejection of God will turn into terror of God. Creation points to a Creator. We were made by God and for God. (Colossians 1:16 )For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. Are you living for God or for yourself?
