The LORD is for me; I will not fear. What can man do to me?

The LORD is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.

It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.

The Psalmist trusted in his divine help; all men turned against him, but God was his defender and advocate, accomplishing the divine purposes of His grace. God is for me, I will not fear. He does not say that he should not suffer, but that he would not fear: the favor of God infinitely outweighed the hatred of men, therefore setting the one against the other he felt that he had no reason to be afraid. He was calm and confident, though surrounded with enemies. What can man do to me? He can do nothing more than God permits; God having purposed to set his servant upon the throne, the whole race of mankind could do nothing to stop the divine decree: the settled purpose of our Father’s heart could not be turned aside, defeated nor delayed, much less prevented, by the hostility of the most powerful of men. “It is a pity to be afraid of such a pitiful, miserable, despicable object as a man opposed to the almighty God” (C.H. Spurgeon). The Psalmist here speaks like a champion, defying the universe without fear and without reproach, he enjoys God's favor, and he defies every foe. Pilots put confidence in their planes. Commuters place confidence in trains, cars, or buses. Each day we must put our confidence in something or someone. If you are willing to trust your mode of transportation to get you to your destination, are you willing to trust God to guide you to your eternal destination? Do you trust him more than any human being? How futile it is to trust anything or anyone more than God.
