But he answered, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

In Deuteronomy 8:3 this phrase refers to God’s word of direction in the wilderness and his provision of manna. Unlike Israel, Jesus did not abandon his trust in God’s provision. Although Jesus had the power of the Holy Spirit in full measure, he replied to each of Satan’s temptations with a reference to Scripture. The power of the Spirit is God’s Word ( Ephesians 6:17 ), and even Jesus relied on Scripture for strength in his spiritual struggle. Are you relying on God’s Word in your current test or temptation?

Psalm 119:9-11.

How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
