Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

A common Hebrew phrase given as a salutation or farewell. Jesus used the clause in a new and deeper sense: His peace is the stability and security of one who has found salvation, who is now reconciled with God. This is something that the world can never give, and it was purchased by the death and resurrection of Jesus . It is the supreme remedy for all fears (v. 1 ) and the legacy Jesus left for us, his heirs.

The Holy Spirit’s work brings deep and lasting peace to our hearts and minds. Unlike worldly peace, which is usually defined as the absence of conflict, Jesus’ peace gives us confident assurance in any circumstance. With his peace, we have no need to fear the present or the future. Sin, fear, uncertainty, doubt, and despair are at war within us, but the peace of God restrains these hostile forces and offers comfort in place of conflict. Jesus purchased our peace with His atoning death. Meditate that our Creator is at peace with us, His children! Let not your hearts be troubled. He himself is our peace.
