Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places…
When we bless or praise God, we recognize and attribute to him his true worth. “Who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing” means that because we are united with Christ, we have all the benefits of knowing God—we have been chosen for salvation, adopted as his children, and forgiven. God gives us insight into his Word, the gifts of the Spirit, power to do his will, and the sure hope of eternal life with Christ. Because we have an intimate relationship with Christ, we can enjoy these eternal blessings now. The use of the phrase heavenly realms tells us that these blessings come from eternity with God and do not originate with our human experience. The blessings come from Christ’s spiritual realm. In light of what Christ has accomplished for us and given to us let us obey Colossians 3:1-4:
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Amen.
