For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

The victory John describes is resisting temptation and keeping faithful to God’s word. It contrasts with the defeat of the human race at the fall (Gen. 3). For John, victory in the battle against temptation has in effect already been won, since our union with God in Christ cannot be broken (John 10:27–30). Jesus never promised that obeying him would be easy. But the hard work and self-discipline of serving him won’t be a burden to those who love him. When your load starts to feel heavy, you can always trust Christ to help you bear it.(Matthew 11.28-20)
